You have to hand it to Edelweiss: With its upcoming game Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin, the indie studio has created a truly unexpected hybrid. The game features frantic melee combat against monsters, as well as more meditative gameplay where you nurture rice crops from planting to harvest and beyond.

Publisher XSEED Games teased the title leading up to E3, but a new English-language trailer is a bit more approachable for Western audiences, even if the concept remains decidedly foreign. After being banished from the celestial realm, the harvest goddess Sakuna is exiled to a demon-infested place called Hinoe Island. There, she has to fight the monsters and bring peace and prosperity back to the land.

Gameplay is divided into two main halves. Combat takes place on a 2D plane, where Sakuna faces off against enemies using her celestial scarf and a variety of gardening tools. Those tools come in handy in the other part of the game, where she needs to plant and harvest rice, craft items, and cook. Along the way, she works with the humans she meets to – hopefully – make the island a better place.

The game is set for a 2018 release on PlayStation 4 and PC.
