When you boot up Fallout 3 for the first time, it’s Inon Zur’s haunting melody that begins your time in the wasteland. The composer, who is behind the music of Dragon Age, a number of Prince of Persia games, and both released Everquest MMOs, is returning for Fallout 4 this fall.
In a new post on Bethesda’s website, you can hear Zur hammering out the new theme on his piano. It turns out the grand piano version was too bright for game director Todd Howard and audio director Mark Lampert.

To mellow the music a bit, the acoustic piano sound was blended with an electric piano. You can hear the final version on Bethesda’s website. For comparison, we've embedded the Fallout 3 version below.

Zur also explains how he uses non-musical instruments to create unique sounds. He’s known to bang on lawn furniture and use his cello bow on chairs, for example. The result is a sound not often found in music, but appropriate for the clanking, broken down feel of the wasteland.
Fallout 4 is due out on November 10 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. For more, check out yesterday’s videos focused on the game’s companions.
